Prince Jarah Lean is the third and youngest son of the Alourian line. He was born frail and fragile, not like his older brothers at all. His older brothers, sturdy and strong, were the ideal of Aloura, and Jarah was shoved off to the side, forsaken. It was not until his magic awoke that he brought any honor to his family. While most Alourians could use a few magics, Jarah found himself being able to wield every one in turn while his brothers couldn't conjure at all.
The priests said that it was simply nature balancing itself out--that a prodigy of magic was born when both older brothers were dumb as a doornail in comparison.
While not anywhere near his brothers in terms of royal pride, Jarah had a place with the most esteemed tutors his parents could buy. Trained in magical combat, Jarah was seen as the nation's last defense should anything happen to the royal line. With a weak body and powerful spells, Jarah learned to manipulate and charm other nobles to keep his kingdom safe, becoming a diplomat that staunchly promoted peace within all countries.
At least, until the Lean family was attacked and killed--only Jarah and Emalia (Emily), the youngest of the Lean children and the only princess, survived. Jarah had been strong enough to fend off the assailants with his magic, but couldn't save anyone but Emalia in the end and himself.
With his sister too young to serve, she was taken under the rival kingdom's wing. Jarah, however, was a prisoner of war--and forced to be a servant to the ruling King Zaheer.

Most Alourians are known as berserkers on the field: that pent-up magical energy--when ignored and not honed--becomes an almost trance-like state known colloquially among Alourians as Bravery. Alourians born without magic abilities are prized among the rest because of their rarity, while those with magic abilities are common. It's ordinary, everyday magic; levitation to put away the dishes, fireballs to start the fireplace, brisk winds to dry the clothes. The scholars and priests of Aloura are seen in higher regard than most magic users, as they divine and see into the future to secure Aloura's place and foretell any catastrophes. Alourians are an old race, constantly rebuilding and renewed; powerful but distant enough that their enemies find it easy to erase them from the history books, making learning about their ancient history difficult.
